Apostles for Life News           June 2002

is published bi-monthly by our Catholic pro-life group in the Lismore Diocese, to inspire and support pro-life prayer, education and action. It is a means of communication between those who attend our meetings (10am third Saturday of each month in the Cathedral in prayer support for those who witness outside abortion clinics) and those who are unable to attend for whatever reason.. There is no cost to the receiver, but as we run on donations, they are most welcome.

Dear Lover of Life,

In my last letter I told you we had sold our home and were heading overseas, in particular to Madagascar, where Nadir had spent several years as a missionary, and to which he has always longed to return. Because of political troubles there we had changed our plans & gone to Europe first, in the hope that things would settle down, but sadly they only got worse, and eventually we had to cancel our plans for visiting Madagascar. I was very fortunate in meeting some Malagasy people in Italy and was so impressed by their gentleness and serenity. It is indeed tragic when we see destruction being perpetrated on these beautiful people. Please pray for them.

We heard of an Italian TV expose which told a story of a nun in Madagascar who had, 14 years ago, uncovered a racket, in a hospital, where Malagasy babies were purchased, while still in-utero, to be used, once born, as spare parts. She had been able to put an end to this particularly evil business and had given a home to some 150 babies whose life she had saved.

While in Rome we had the pleasure of twice meeting with Father Ignacio Barreiro, who runs Human Life International office in Rome. We had much to share and enjoyed so much the short time we had with him. Father has great opportunities to promote the pro-life message to priests and seminarians who come to Rome from all over the world.

We also had the pleasure to meet several young women who had been rescued from slavery by Giovanna. The slave trade still prospers in Europe, to where these women are snared from Africa, China and the eastern bloc countries with offers of paid work. Once they are in Italy they are virtual prisoners of their masters and forces into prostitution. In Giovanna’s home there were about 14 of these young women and 2 of their babies. Please pray for Giovanna and her friends because they are always in great danger from unscrupulous dealers.

One of the high spots in our travels happened while waiting for a bus to take us from old Assisi to Assisi train station. The bus stop was crowded, and a group of Hispanic women were handing out leaflets. One reached over the top of several heads to give me one written in Italian. I responded by saying that I don’t read Italian, and in return she handed me one in English! Then we all piled onto the bus and as I read I was inspired to ask for a few more – this time in Italian. I wished to hand some out too. I will reproduce their message below. As you read it, read Australia for Europe – because the latest census tells us that Australia’s birthrate is tragically low at 1.7 children per woman (well below replacement level).

We learned that these women belonged to Miles Jesu. (Soldiers of Jesus) -, an Ecclesial Family of Consecrated Life – a form of consecrated life for the laity. We became friends and went to their home for lunch one Sunday. We learned that in the Rome house there were 13 young women, from several countries from all over the world, from Cuba, Mexico, Ukraine, US, Poland. (There are even greater numbers of young men but we did not have the opportunity to meet any of them.) We were particularly impressed by their sound knowledge of the world situation, and their great missionary zeal, humility and preparedness for a life of sacrifice – not to mention their outright friendliness, openness and hospitality. I found myself wishing we had them here in Lismore! Why not visit their website at www.milesjesu.com

Till next time, keep on praying for opportunities to spread God’s love,

Angela Millennium Manifesto

Wake up, Europe! You’re killing yourself!

All over Europe there are more deaths than births of Europeans. And no foreigner is doing this to the Europeans. They are doing it to themselves. In 50 years there will be very few Europeans; in 100 years who knows how many will be left.

You yourselves are waging the most terrible war that ever happened against Europe, a silent and very efficient war to destroy and kill yourself. Europeans are disappearing slowly but surely. You think you are going against the Church, but you are going against yourselves!

A selfish, self-centred code of ethics that promotes the disappearance of European children - birth control, abortion, divorce, homosexuality, drugs, euthanasia, assisted suicide - an insatiable greed for money that drives Europeans to kill, physically and morally, fellow Europeans.

The Catholic Church condemns all those things because the Catholic Church, like Her Founder, Jesus Christ, loves people. Not in vain is He called the Saviour of the World, and the Saviour of Europe too.

Each race is a treasure to humanity and the Church always defends it as such. Isn’t it ironic that the same white race that some are mistakingly promoting as supreme, is the race that is destroying itself? The price of pride is always self-destruction. How incomprehensible that Europeans can be doing so much to save certain endangered species of animals, while at the same time doing little or nothing to preserve themselves from extinction!

Wake up, Europeans, wake up! You’re driving your beautiful, comfortable, luxurious car slowly – and picking up speed – into the abyss of self destruction.Once again, as always, following the teaching of the Saviour of the World, Jesus Christ, Europe and the world will be saved in the new millennium.

Underpopulation Problems on the Rise

(CWNews.com) European government officials have begun to warn that pension systems for the retired and elderly face economic collapse because there too few children being born to pay into the systems as the population ages.

At the same time the UN issued a warning that the world faces a problem of underpopulation, despite previous warnings by UN agencies and other groups of overpopulation. The UN puts the blame for underpopulation on government policies over the past half century that decreased the fertility rate among citizens, leaving many countries with a negative birthrate. The UN reported that 61 nations and all of Europe now fall below fertility replacement. There is also a concern in Europe that the increased strain on medical systems will lead to increased euthanasia, even involuntary.

“Europe is dying because of population control efforts,” said Mark De Young, Director of World Life League. “Birthrates in Russia have been cut in half since 1998. Russia’s population is plummeting at a rate of half a million per year. Italy is in even worse demographic straits. Overall Europe’s population will fall by 122 million in the next 50 years. Leaders of these nations must make drastic changes in policy to ensure survival of their people.”

It always happens, like it did with the propaganda of overpopulation, that when man plays God it always backfires. Now the lives of those who propagated the myth of overpopulation, those who believed in it, and even the lives of innocent souls are in danger in their old age of voluntary and involuntary euthanasia.

Cooperate with the Creator! “God blessed them and said: Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth. ” (Gen. 1:28)

A letter written by Marijonas Vilkelis, a tireless pro-life activist here in Lismore, appeared in the Northern Rivers Echo of June 20, 2002. On asking his permission to reprint it in AFL News, he sent me his original article, which is four times the length of the published letter. Congratulations, Mari, for being able to get such unmentionabe realities into a usually censored medium. It is so good that I felt I had to print the whole article. Here it is:

This is a response to Jim Lee's letter (Echo May 23). Jim's assertions, and his perceptions concerning abortion and the status of an embryo, are typical of a much broader social mindset which resulted from strategic misinformation and outright lies fed to the en-masse public over the past four decades.

Grandchildren are now being born to the generation which, unbeknown to itself, has been physiologically, psychologically and spiritually 'poisoned' by the pharmaceutical and medical industry. This 'poisoned' condition now prevails in the third generation as naturally as the rising sun.

Governmental collusion with industrial giants to deceive the public is nothing new, but it took a uniquely sinister and socially catastrophic turn in the late 50’s - early 60’s. The first contraceptive pill trials on the public were revealing dire consequences for the wellbeing of women. The early prototype pill was a true contraceptive, in that it completely blocked the ovulation cycle of the woman. The thinking then was based on the notion that if no ovum matures and enters the fallopian tube, no conception can occur. This desired result was achieved by a regular oral dose of an artificial version of a hormone called oestrogen. However these were early days and the profound complexities of the female reproductive cycle were frontiers of knowledge. Indeed, in many ways they still are.

When the serious and even lethal problems of women began to accumulate from these (albeit, publicly unbeknown) trials, it became clear to the pharmaceutical scientists that it was not possible to induce complete cessation of ovulation and still have a healthy woman.

The next step was where the real rot in medical and political ethics began to set in. These ethics, once compromised, have continued to deteriorate and have perpetrated the 'poisoning', of amongst other things, society's dignity and the social sense of right and wrong.

The concentration of oestrogen in the pill was lowered to an ovulatory interference, or suppression level. This meant that since some ovulation was bound to occur, some conceptions were also certain to occur. The pharmaceutical industry knew that the pill's acceptability and financial success depended upon the public's illusion and total confidence in the pill's efficiency, so they added another component – progestogen, which interferes with the preparation of the inner wall of the womb (endometrium) for the implantation and gestation of an embryo. Once attached to this lining, the embryo is nurtured until it is born some nine months later. The progestogen component prevents the embryo from implanting and therefore an early (usually unknown) abortion is induced. The rejected embryo is eventually flushed into the sewer. Virtually all versions of the modern pill are abortifacient. The promotion of the pill as a contraceptive is not only misleading, it is a malicious lie.

Knowing that public morals would reject abortion as a means of birth control, the pharmaceutical industry played on the public's naïveté regarding the difference between "conceiving" and "becoming pregnant". They promoted the perception that conception and pregnancy were one and the same thing, so "not becoming pregnant" implied that no conception had taken place.

As a measure of protection against eventual class action by an awakened duped public, they documented the actual pharmacological function of the pill in catalogues like Mims. They knew however that, without media promotion, this information was as good as under lock and key, especially since the scientific language in these documents was well beyond the understanding of the regular Mr and Ms Citizen. So the information was there for all to see, but most were blind to knowing it existed or understanding it. Instead, the public trustingly believed the media, their doctor and even their religious minister, and began swallowing the pill in an air of progress and liberation.

The only substantial bastion of resistance to the pill was the Catholic Church, but this resistance was entirely based on the immorality of contraception itself, and the abortifacient factor seemed to successfully avoid attention. With heavy pro-pill media promotion, the public adopted the perception of Catholics being staid party-poopers who’d missed the boat of progress and liberation. So a 40-year conspiracy to hijack humanity's future, its wellbeing and its dignity, has been allowed to continue, not just unabated, but progressively drawn towards a deep-seated death culture.

The pharmaceutical industry foresaw that the longer the pill was established, the more difficult, if not impossible, it would become for society to reject it. The longer it was in use, the more natural it would appear to successive generations and eventually, like now, it would be perceived as little more than a cup of tea. Even a number of influential Catholic ethicists have been active in loopholing justification for its sale by Catholic pharmacists who might otherwise find themselves in a moral dilemma. Ironically, one of these pharmacists is a founding member and current C.E.O. of a leading Australian pro-life organisation - promoting and fuelling with one hand the very adversity the other hand is fighting.

To keep spiritual matters confined to the Sabbath, and make "business is business” the charge for the remaining six days, the conscience-twigged pharmacists' argument goes that, since the pill has therapeutic application besides birth control, it is not for them to query the recipient's or their doctor's motives for the script. This is somewhat like selling a gun to a child on the proviso that he or she is only going to shoot at tin cans. Another part of the moral loophole, which requires considerably more contortion, reasons that, since there is no broad scientific consensus on the pill's frequency of conception-abortion, it can therefore be construed that abortion might never occur, and if it does, it's only an occasional accident. This rationale turns a blind-eye to both the virtual statistical certainty of conception and abortion occurring, and to an undisputable intentional design characteristic of the pill itself. This rationale is like arguing that there just may be no bullets in the gun and even if there are, the firing pin might fail to function.

It is difficult to study the frequency at which conceptions and abortions occur with women on the pill, but some research estimations indicate that this could average as high as one conception-abortion per year. Some varieties of the pill can cause more abortions and some less, but sooner or later they all act as abortifacient. This means that on any one day around the world, millions of human embryos are being flushed down sewers and tossed into garbage tips unbeknown to their parents.

However one looks at the abortion or embryo issue, this abortifacient process cannot be denied as an act of rejection, violence, aggression and death. Ironically, these processes are initiated in the course of the most intimate, tender and affectionate expressions between human beings. So what people call "making love" actually involves making death and destruction. However much in the microcosm this life-death cycle occurs, we are still affected. The integrity and functionality of our entire visible body - our skin, our hands, our feet, our head, our mind etc - is absolutely continuous with the integrity of the microcosm - its cellular and molecular biological integrity. One always reflects and affects the other. If there is disruption or malfunction in the microcosm of our bodies, we eventually discover it as disease in our visible, tangible body. This can manifest physiologically and psychologically and even in some circumstances, spiritually. We can become decrepit with physical disease, but we can and do become otherwise decrepit in the various traits we unconsciously adopt in consequence to our activities, such as perversities, deception, violence and substance abuse. Indeed, the destructibility brought by abortifacients will one day be seen to be a millionfold over drugs like heroin.

When we knowingly or unknowingly destroy the unions of our bodies - our conceptions - whether they be at the one cell, 16 cell, million cell, or trillion cell stage, the destruction process eventually effects our sensible (smell, touch, see, hear, taste, think) reality in which we become unconsciously inclined to conform to the momentum of destruction. We perpetrate this destructive force into the world around us in various (usually indirect and subtle) ways, such as becoming that little bit more selfish, losing trust in people, becoming suspicious of others, seeing life just a little less meaningful, feeling just that little more futile, seeing death as a not-so-bad solution to problems. Slowly these changes in attitude consolidate into a peer-force across the social systems and become reflected in the legislature, the various ethics committees and even the judiciary. Family structure has become broken at its very foundation by the pill, so the family unit inevitably has suffered progressive disintegration. The boundaries of things that were once indisputably wrong became indistinct, so that what was once bad became perceived as good, and the changes were seen as liberating progress.

Once the life-death cycle became established in the womb of humanity, death became naturalised and perceived as a decent and acceptable commodity for an increasing range of circumstances. It became a solution to an increasing range of human problems.

Why would scientific ethics concern itself about the right or wrong of embryo research and cell harvesting when millions of embryos are being destroyed daily worldwide by abortifacients? Why would the IVF programs blink at actively destroying around a dozen embryos for every one that is gestated to birth? Why would there be any concern for what became of the thousands of surplus frozen embryos reserved in IVF clinics? Since almost all of these embryos are destined for destruction, why should scientific research not profit from this windfall? Since there is no practical code of ethics in generating and destroying IVF embryos, why not also generate them for industry's needs?

Forty years ago came the abortifacient pill, ten years later - abortion. Ten years after that the human spare parts industry began to salivate over the abundance of foetal tissue. However, they needed this “tissue” at optimum stages of foetal development, so they began to schedule abortions at suitable stages for research and tissue harvesting. This contributed to undermining any existing limitations of the abortion industry. Next came partial birth abortion - no longer was it considered obscene and perverted to kill near-term and full-term babies because they were in some way inconvenient.

To suggest to the pro-abortion lobby 20 years earlier that such barbarity would occur by the slippery-slide-effect, would have resulted in being labelled alarmist, scare monger, fanatic. Jim's thoughts still echo these phrases.

In this same four-decade period came the growing acceptance of euthanasia. A Monash University ethicist dared to promote the notion that not only should abortion and embryo research be unrestrained, the legal threshold of personhood should be extended from birth to a few months post-natal, so that the child can be assessed without haste, and then nurtured or euthanased. That such suggestions can be proffered in an air of respectability and decency, and in particular that the killing of late-term babies has become an acceptable procedure, is in my opinion, scientific evidence of acquired progressive social decrepitness. If one looks at the statistics of violence, drug abuse, family breakdown, mental health problems and many medical conditions, all begin to escalate after the advent of The Pill.

Certain factions of the scientific fraternity have arrogantly, and I dare say criminally, usurped society's destiny towards freedom, happiness and self determination. The illusion of progress by way of desecrated human life, has instead wrought deformities upon human decency and integrity. These deformities are now affecting themselves in perverse political activities as well as in other scientific and social characteristics. Hopelessness sets deeper and deeper into humanity.

Scientific excellence and productivity achieved by way of human desecration, can only result in eventual catastrophe. There is still time to turn around!

Letter to the Editor

Dear Angela and Nadir, Your work to foster awareness of pro-life issues in the local community deserves high commendation. The scientists keep on coming up with new perversions of the same theme, don’t they, what with human cloning now on the agenda. Likewise the social scientists: homosexual marriages and adoption rights now well nigh legalised. In a way it all began with divorce and the dishonouring of marriage, and with contraception and the severance of sex from procreation and vice versa. The trail of devilish consequences just goes on and on. As has been said before, without God, all things are permissible.

Regards, Anna Silvas, Armidale

A big thank you

To all who contributed, volunteered and/or spent money at the Garage Sale back in February. We were able to send a cheque for $300 to Linda Watson for “Linda’s House of Hope” which offers refuge for women escaping prostitution, and a cheque for $50 to Anne Lastman for the wonderful work she does for “Victims of Abortion”. Unsold items were donated to the Friends of Carmel for their annual garage sale
