Apostles for Life News

August 2006

Apostles for Life is a lay initiative in the Catholic Diocese of Lismore to inspire and support pro-life prayer, education and action in conformity with the Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church. We publish bi-monthly as a means of communication between those who attend our meetings & those who are unable to attend, and we distribute free (though donations are welcomed) to anyone who works and prays that the Gospel of Life will flourish in our Diocese. Meetings 10am, 3rd Saturday each month. We have a wide range of information on many pro-life topics and want to share with whoever is open to hear the pro-life message.

Editor: Angela Martello, PO Box 831, Lismore 2480 Phone/fax 66212348 Email: apost5@apostlesforlifesite.org Website: www.apostlesforlifesite.org

Gabrielle Rose: Last edition we asked for your prayers for Jane and Steven and their baby. Gabrielle Rose was born in Brisbane on 10th July 9 weeks early. She was in a critical but stable condition, with kidney, heart and lung problems, so she and her parents continue to need your prayers. (Update – she is now breathing on her own and continues to make progress, praise God!)

Billboard: We want any woman considering abortion to know that there is someone who will be there to support her through her pregnancy and the birth of her child. This illustration is one which is sponsored by Cairns Branch of Qld. Right to Life. We have plans for advertising. We need:

~ YOUR PRAYERS that we will be able to do this without too much difficulty.

~ A LOCATION on a Highway or main thoroughfare, so if you know any person who would allow us to use their roadside property to erect a sign, we would love to hear from you.

~ A PREGNANCY SUPPORT ORGANIZATION to advertise, until we get our own up and running.

Viva La France!!! We were thrilled to be able to host these two delightful 22 year old French students. Valerie Nourrisat and Aude Sartre (pictured here with Miriam Martello) cycled from Sydney to Whitsunday to raise funds for the Le Jeune Foundation.

Jerome Le Jeune is known as the Father of Modern Genetics and is noted for his great love for all human life, especially for the intellectually disabled. His great achievement was to find the cause of Down Syndrome. Aude and Valerie are wonderful ambassadors for the Foundation, for the pro-life movement and for France! On the next page, I’ve included “Tom Thumb” from the pen of this great humble man. http://www.fondationlejeune.org/eng/Content/Fondation/professeurlj.asp

“Wanted Dead or Alive – Organ Donors” by Dr Paul Byrne, a neat pamphlet produced and generously donated to us by Pro-Life Wisconsin, is enclosed for our post-mail readers. Please read it and pass it on to generous altruistic souls who may be at risk because they are not FULLY INFORMED about brain death and organ donation. It will be an eye-opener for some! If you would like more to spread the message we will be pleased to oblige. If our website readers would like a copy just email apost5@apostlesforlifesite.org with your name and address and we would be happy to post you one.

God bless you all, and all your efforts for those whose lives are endangered,

Angela

The story of Tom Thumb

As told by Professor Jérôme Lejeune, the father of modern genetics (1926- 1994) the discoverer of Trisomy 21. A humble loving Catholic man who died with the sad feeling of failing in his mission: "I was the doctor who was supposed to cure them and as I leave, I feel I am abandoning them."

His work led him to think about the important questions of human life, on the role of medicine or of research, and to actively defend the meek. Here is one of the quotations, taken from interviews, lectures, conferences, his diary, etc.

At the true age of one month, … a human being is four and a half millimetres long. Its tiny heart has already been beating for a week, its arms, legs, head, brain are already recognisable.

At two months old, … from head to the tip of its bottom, the human embryo is about three centimetres long. It could fit curled up inside a walnut shell. Inside a clenched fist, it would be invisible, and the clenched fist would crush it accidentally without even noticing. But open your hand, the embryo is almost complete, hands, feet, head, organs, brain, everything is in its place and from now on will merely grow. Look more closely, you can already read the life lines in its palms and predict its good fortunes. Look closer still, with an ordinary microscope, and you can see its fingerprints. Everything is already there and it would be possible to issue its identity card.

The incredible Tom Thumb, the man no bigger than my thumb, actually exists ; not the one in the fairy tale, but the one which every one of us once was.

But what about the brain, they say, it is only complete at five or six months. But no, in fact it is only entirely in place at birth: its countless connections are only fully established at six or seven years, and its chemical and electrical mechanisms is only fully run-in at fourteen or fifteen!

Gradually, we reach the end of the embryo period, two months after impregnation. At that stage, the little one is as big as my thumb. And this is why all mothers tell fairy tales to their children, tell them about Tom Thumb, because it is a true story. Each one of us was a Tom Thumb in our mother's womb, and women have always known that there is a sort of underground country, a sort of vaulted shelter with a reddish glow and a rhythmic sound in which tiny humans live a strange and marvelous life. This is the true story of Tom Thumb. http://www.fondationlejeune.org/eng/Content/Fondation/professeurlj.asp

Stormy Times!

Angela Martello

You may have noticed that this issue is a month late. I have been delaying publication in the hope of not having to write this report. These past three months have been the most difficult for me and our little group in Lismore, in the seven years we have been going.

Some of you may remember (I hope) in the June 2006 newsletter promotional pieces in four spaces introducing Gerry Keane to the readers who did not yet know him, and informing all of Gerry’s intended visit to Lismore Diocese.

Gerry Keane is a gifted writer/speaker on the issue of the Origins Debate, and totally faithful to the Magisterium of the Church. Gerry wrote to our Bishop and received a response dated 3 May 2006:

I thank you for your letter of 20 April seeking permission to speak on Catholic premises in the Diocese of Lismore on the subject of creation / evolution / origins, and for the enclosed copy of your booklet “Special Creation Rediscovered”.

I am happy to grant the authorization required, and to assure any parish priest whom you approach for the use of church premises that you will be speaking from within the parameters of Catholic teaching on this subject.

With kind regards, and wishing you every blessing in the joy of the Easter season.

Yours sincerely in Christ,

+Most Rev. Geoffrey H Jarrett,

Bishop of Lismore.

This was “pure gift” – a man of immense integrity and wisdom, with an amazing command of the written and spoken word on the science and theology of such a crucial and topical issue, even for the secular media, as The Origins Debate; a man who has studied the issue from a thoroughly Catholic perspective for over thirty years; a man who has literally put his life on the line, for the sake of the children who are being slaughtered daily in abortion clinics in Australia, yes even within the boundaries of Lismore diocese and the Tweed Heads Parish in particular; a man authorized to speak in our Diocese, while being disparaged and dismissed by the Vicar General, Fr. Dennis Carroll, who being asked on three occasions, has been unwilling, or unable, to articulate his problem with Gerry.

To add injury to insult, he has banned our Apostles for Life group from using Lismore Parish facilities; we who have been faithfully praying without fail at least once a month for the past seven years, for the cessation of abortion, the conversion of abortionists, and the healing of all those involved in abortion.

We, the Parish group who stands out to defend the right to life from conception to natural death, have been insulted and scorned by the one appointed by God to act as our Spiritual Father. But this is to be expected when we stand up for those threatened with untimely and unjust death. Our Lord got this treatment, so why shouldn’t we? Indeed, we should be glad to suffer with Him and His little ones. This allows us to identify with the most despised persons in our sick society. For those who actually take seriously the Word of God and act on it, there will persecution. We were promised it, by One who never breaks His Promises.

One thing that has become apparent to me in all this is that there are precious few who really understand the enormity of the problem caused by the acceptance of the Myth of Evolution and the damage that it is doing to our Church and to our children.

With this in mind I am publishing an excellent article, “Our society deceived into thinking a fetus is not human” from the Kolbe Centre for the Study of Creation website. I hope to be able to publish more on this important issue in the future.

So you see, dear reader, we live in hard times and we have need of your prayers.

Gerry may yet come but not at this moment in time!

Our society, deceived into thinking a fetus is:

NOT HUMAN

Unraveling the mystery...

Have you ever wondered how our society came to believe that a fetus is sub-human? Isn’t it confusing: When you ask any pro-abortion pregnant woman, “Would you kill this child if it were born?” She responds with a horrified, ”NO! That would be murder!”

How and why did she come to distinguish between life inside and outside of her womb? How was she deceived into thinking the fetus was not a child? Most shocking of all, how has Satan blinded our minds and consciences? This was a great mystery and became for me a matter of prayerful contemplation.

One day, I was flipping through a creation book, perusing the articles, when I came across an image that grabbed my attention. I felt electrified—horrified—for at that moment the Lord answered the question that I had been pondering for such a long time. He showed me the roots of the tree of abortion.

In the book before me, a drawing of a human embryo was being compared with a row of drawings of animal embryos by a man named Ernst Haeckel.

Haeckel had claimed that the similarities between the animal and the human embryos proved common ancestry. But I discovered that these drawings by Ernst Haeckel were proven to be a fraud — Haeckel’s frauds (top row) compared with actual embryos (bottom row) — and yet for almost a hundred years virtually every science textbook featured Haeckel’s fraudulent drawings as “proof” of human evolution. Indeed, these drawings laid the foundation for the most destructive lie ever launched against life in the womb.

This same lie—a lie that has permeated our society and justified the murder of innocent babies—this same lie was taught to me in college biology, as “embryonic recapitulation”

I was taught that the fetus evolves in the womb, “recapitulating” our alleged ancestral past. I was told that this involves going though an alleged “fishy state” where the embryo develops “gill slits.” (In reality, what were falsely called “gill slits” were pharyngeal arches that develop into parts of the middle ear, and into the muscles of the pharynx, larynx, and soft palate.)

In this way, my textbook taught me that the embryo was not human in its development. As a Christian I was aware that this twisted teaching about the fetus was a falsehood, for, as Pope Benedict XVI (Inaugural Mass on Sunday, April 29th, 2005, St. Peter’s Square) says:

We are not some casual and meaningless product of evolution. Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed, each of us is loved, each of us is necessary.

But “embryonic recapitulation” has been taught in the biology curriculum for many decades. Small wonder, then, that our society finds it acceptable to “dispose of” a developing fetus.

I now see that Evolutionism is truly a destroyer of life. It has been carefully crafted by the devil to confuse and deceive women. The attack can be quite subtle. Permeate the education system with this evil doctrine and persuade the general public to view pre-born babies as less than human.

Signs that proclaim the sanctity of life from conception—while they may reach some people—fail to reach many of those who have been brainwashed by Haeckelian propaganda. Too many have been blinded.

So what can be done to reveal the truth to our society? How can we attack the foundations of the abortion culture? We need a new paradigm of human life from conception to natural death—one which is consistent with the most up-to-date scientific data and which upholds the full humanity of the human being against Haeckel’s fraudulent pictures. Examine the drawings for yourself. Think of the millions of young people in high school biology courses, brainwashed into believing an evolutionary lie that “dehumanizes” the fetus!

At this point, I hope that your soul is crying out, “What can be done”?

The truth of divine creation provides the answer. It teaches people in our society how God sees the world, that He made us, and that He creates each baby in the womb. We can rejoice that many Catholics are rediscovering the truth of creation, unmasking various frauds that have become “icons of evolution,” obscuring the truth and contributing to the culture of death in our society.

One group that exposes the errors of evolution is the Kolbe Center for the Study of Creation. (www.kolbecenter.org). The Kolbe Center provides a forum for Catholic Bishops, theologians, philosophers, natural scientists, and laity who seek to restore the traditional Catholic teaching on creation and the early history of mankind. The Kolbe Center provides evidence from a traditional Catholic perspective that Adam and Eve were not some advanced form of primate, but rather were specially created in the image and likeness of their Creator.

In his encyclical Arcanum, Pope Leo XIII testified to this constant teaching of the Church when he wrote,

“We record what is to all known, and cannot be doubted by any, that God, on the sixth day of creation, having made man from the slime of the earth, and having breathed into his face the breath of life, gave him a companion, whom He miraculously took from the side of Adam when he was locked in sleep. God thus, in His most far-reaching foresight, decreed that this husband and wife should be the natural beginning of the human race, from whom it might be propagated and preserved by an unfailing fruitfulness throughout all futurity of time.”

Thus we know that every human being—born and unborn—comes from our Creator and that we are all therefore descended from our first parents, Adam and Eve.

In conclusion, we can see a fundamental connection between the truth about our origins and our need to increase the fruitfulness of our pro-life efforts. Let us take to heart the words of Pope Benedict—words that reflect the need to recognize the truth of God as Creator and to find purpose in our lives and in the lives of the unborn:

“We are not some casual and meaningless product of evolution. Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed, each of us is loved, each of us is necessary. There is nothing more beautiful than to be surprised by the Gospel, by the encounter with Christ. There is nothing more beautiful than to know Him and to speak to others of our friendship with Him.”

Let us all be prepared to share the gospel of Jesus Christ our Creator and Savior as we intensify our pro-life efforts!

TIP-TOEING TO MARY

New Orleans September 11, 2002

Amy and Andrew Di Maggio … don’t have to be told that their one-year-old daughter, Anna Maria, is special. They get a glimpse of it every day when the toddler walks out to the front yard of her house and begins an animated conversation with the Blessed Mother. “Whenever she is in the front yard, she will always stop playing at some point and walk up to our statue of Mary,” the Di Maggios said. “In this photo she was holding up her hands and talking to Mary in her own babble language. We hope this picture will inspire your readers to remember the words of Jesus who said that to enter the Kingdom of Heaven we must be open as a child.”

A short excerpt from

Contraception and Common Sense

By Dr. Les Hemingway, M.B., B.S.

UNNATURAL BEHAVIOUR

The use of contraception is contrary to natural law. This fact is recognized by the Catholic Church, but in general the Church’s claim is poorly understood. Nature is manipulated every day as rivers are dammed to store water, plants and animals are bred to supply food, fibres, companionship and sport; and the natural progress of disease is checked by surgery or drugs.

So people ask: “What is the difference between removing a diseased appendix and tying fallopian tubes, or between taking an antibiotic and taking the contraceptive pill?”

One difference is easily explained. Appendices are only removed when they become diseased. Antibiotics are taken to kill dangerous micro-organisms. Such therapeutic procedures restore patients to health - by destroying pathological bacteria or removing malfunctioning bodily parts.

Contraceptives function in a totally different way. Instead of removing a malfunction they actually produce one. Contraceptives turn normal fertility into an abnormal, sterile state. They impair the function of healthy reproductive organs. Contraceptives damage the bodies of those who use them and they are taken for that express purpose. Contraceptives have more in common with poisons or pesticides than with operations and medications directed against disease.

However while this shows how contraceptives differ from therapeutic surgery or drugs, it does not explain why contraception is unnatural. That explanation is revealed by studying human nature……..

If you would like a copy of Dr Hemingway’s 82-page practical commonsense book, please send at least $2 in (Australian) postage stamps (within Australia) and we will forward you a copy. For overseas readers we can make other arrangements.

About the Author: Les Hemingway left school at 14 to become a turner and fitter. He later resumed full time schooling, graduating from Melbourne University Medical School in 1955. After working at Footscray hospital for two years he entered general practice. He worked in Warrnambool for nearly 37 years and now spends his time providing locum relief for other doctors in Victoria and NSW. Les became a Catholic in 1957 and immediately faced questions relating to the church’s teaching on contraception. He has followed that teaching in his private and in his professional life. He has written this book to explain why all lay people and other doctors should do the same. Les and his wife, Verna, have twelve children.

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception

8th Dec 2005 After Holy Mass, several families, together with Fr. Peter Padsangay and Fr. Michael Alcock, enjoyed a Bar-B-Q, then we all prayed the Rosary in front of the statue of Our Lady, specially adorned for her great feast. On August 15, we celebrate the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Mary's being taken bodily to Heaven. In 1950 the Church proclaimed this teaching a dogma of the Church - one of the essential beliefs of the Catholic faith.

The Parable Of The Two Pots.

Author Unknown

A Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole, which she carried across her neck. While one of the pots was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the other pot had a crack in it, and arrived only half full.

For two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.

After two years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house."

The old woman smiled, "Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because, having always known about your flaw, I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house."

Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding. You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.

So, to all of my crackpot friends, remember to smell the flowers on your side of the path!
